Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was a Norweigian painter known for his expressionist and psychologically-charged works. "Love and Pain" (1895), also sometimes titled "Vampire," depicts two figures embracing — a woman sits bent over a man, who is resting with his head on her lap. While Munch maintained that she is merely kissing his neck to comfort his anguish, many interpreted it as a vampire’s bite, perhaps reading into the stark color contrasts of black and red and ominous shadow behind them.
